Alternative to Practical: use the original printed figures and show graph/measurement working. The printed 2(b)(i) table entry carries no separate mark; it is retained as context for the graph.

(a)Fig. 3.1 gives density data for liquids. Liquid P has volume 19 cm³ and density 1.2 g/cm³ but its mass entry is blank. Calculate its mass to two significant figures.

Answer guidance

Calculate Show your working. The method can earn marks even when the final value is wrong, and a bare answer often cannot.

(b)(i)Two identical beakers each contain 100 cm³ water. Name an instrument to measure this volume accurately.

Answer guidance

State A short answer. No explanation is needed, and adding one cannot earn extra marks.

(b)(ii)1Beaker A contains water with oil floating above. Beaker B contains water above an unknown liquid. Fig. 3.1 lists liquids P, Q and R; Fig. 3.2 shows the layers. State and explain which liquid is the unknown one.

Answer guidance

State A short answer. No explanation is needed, and adding one cannot earn extra marks.

(b)(ii)2Both beakers contain 100 cm³ water and 100 cm³ of their other liquid. Using your liquid choice from 3(b)(ii)1, Fig. 3.1 and Fig. 3.2, state and explain which beaker and contents have greater mass.

Answer guidance

Using You must use the thing it names. An answer that reaches the right value another way may not score.

(c)Fig. 3.3 shows a wooden block resting at the oil/water boundary in beaker A. State what its position implies about the density of the wood.

Answer guidance

State A short answer. No explanation is needed, and adding one cannot earn extra marks.
