CIE-5054-2023-MJ-p21 · Question 1

Theory: answer each printed part. For drawings, upload a clear photo of your sketch on the supplied figure; show working and units for calculations.

An aircraft pulls a glider along a runway as shown in Fig. 1.1.

Fig. 1.2 shows the speed of the glider during the first 12 s of the motion.

(a)Describe the motion of the glider in the first 12 s.

Answer guidance

Describe Say what happens, in order. Reasons are not required unless the question also asks why.

[2 marks]

In the first 6.0 s of the motion, there is a resultant force of 1800 N on the glider.

(b)Using the increase in speed in the first 6.0 s, calculate the mass of the glider. Give your answer in kg.

Answer guidance

Using You must use the thing it names. An answer that reaches the right value another way may not score.

[3 marks]

(c)Determine the distance travelled by the glider in the first 6.0 s of its motion. Give your answer in m.

Answer guidance

Determine Work it out from what you are given or from the figure, and show how you got there.

[2 marks]

The glider has no engine and stays in the air with the use of convection currents.

(d)(i)State what is meant by a ‘convection current’.

Answer guidance

State A short answer. No explanation is needed, and adding one cannot earn extra marks.

[1 mark]

(d)(ii)Suggest how the convection current that supports the glider is formed.

Answer guidance

Suggest More than one answer may be acceptable, so long as it is consistent with the physics.
