CIE-5054-2023-MJ-p22 · Question 5

Available practice: 76 of 80 marks. Parts 10(c) await marking support. Scores cover available parts only. Theory: answer each printed part. For drawings, upload a clear photo of your sketch on the supplied figure; show working and units for calculations.

Water waves are transverse waves.

(a)Underline two other transverse waves from this printed list: seismic P-waves, seismic S-waves, sound, X-rays.

Answer guidance

Draw Accuracy is being marked. Use the figure and be precise about position and labels.

Fig. 5.1 shows a wooden bar and glass block in a ripple tank.

(b)(i)In the ripple tank of Fig. 5.1, a wooden bar moves once every 0.15 s, making waves travel at 27 cm/s. Calculate wave frequency and wavelength.

Answer guidance

Calculate Show your working. The method can earn marks even when the final value is wrong, and a bare answer often cannot.

[3 marks]

(b)(ii)The wave diffracts at the right-hand edge of the glass block. On Fig. 5.1 draw two crests after they pass the block to show diffraction.

[2 marks]

(b)(iii)Describe how to use the wooden bar to make a wave with a smaller wavelength.

Answer guidance

Describe Say what happens, in order. Reasons are not required unless the question also asks why.

[1 mark]

(b)(iv)Describe how a decrease in wavelength affects diffraction.

Answer guidance

Describe Say what happens, in order. Reasons are not required unless the question also asks why.
