A student investigates the resistance of a wire using the circuit in Fig. 2.1. A flying lead touches different positions on the wire beside a metre rule; a voltmeter measures the potential difference across the 10 Ω resistor. Fig. 2.2 shows the voltmeter with the flying lead at the 100.0 cm mark. Read the voltage and enter it in the first row of Table 2.1.

Complete Table 2.1. At L=100.0 cm use your voltage from (a)(i); the other printed pairs (L cm, V volts) are (80.0, 2.00), (60.0, 2.30), (40.0, 2.70), (20.0, 3.20). Use I=V/10 Ω, calculate 1/I for each row, and add units to the column headings.

Table 2.1 — fill the missing readings and add units
L / ___V / ___I / ___1/I / ___

80.02.00……
60.02.30……
40.02.70……

A student investigates the resistance of a wire using the circuit in Fig. 2.1. A flying lead touches different positions on the wire beside a metre rule; a voltmeter measures the potential difference across the 10 Ω resistor. On the supplied graph grid, plot 1/I on the y-axis against L on the x-axis using Table 2.1. Start both axes at (0,0).

(b)(ii)

Draw a thin straight line of best fit through the points on the supplied graph grid; extend it to the y-axis.

Answer guidance

Draw Accuracy is being marked. Use the figure and be precise about position and labels.

(b)(iii)

Find the gradient G and y-intercept c of your best-fit line. Show your chosen points and working on the graph.

Answer guidance

Show The result is given, so every step of the reasoning is what earns the marks.

(c)

Theory gives Rw = 1000G/c, where Rw is the wire resistance. Use your gradient and intercept from (b)(iii) to calculate Rw in Ω; show working.
