Fig. 3.1 shows a sealed plastic bag containing air. Explain, in terms of particles, how the air exerts pressure on the inside surface of the bag.

A passenger in an aircraft seals some air inside a plastic bag.

Explain how the particles of air in the bag exert a pressure on the inside of the bag.

Answer guidance

Explain Give reasons, not just what happens. Each distinct reason is usually worth a mark.

[2 marks]
(b)(i)

When the bag is closed, the pressure of the air inside the aircraft is 80 kPa and the bag contains 500 cm³ of air.

When the aircraft is on the ground, the pressure of the air inside the aircraft is 100 kPa.

Calculate the volume of air inside the bag when the aircraft is on the ground.

volume = ...................................... cm³

Answer guidance

Calculate Show your working. The method can earn marks even when the final value is wrong, and a bare answer often cannot.

(b)(ii)

State one assumption that you made in your calculation in (i).

Answer guidance

State A short answer. No explanation is needed, and adding one cannot earn extra marks.

Fig. 3.1 shows a sealed plastic bag containing air. The air in the bag has a pressure of 80 kPa and a volume of 500 cm³. The bag is brought down to ground level, where the air pressure is 100 kPa. Sketch on Fig. 3.2 how the volume of the air in the bag varies with pressure. The initial pressure and volume are shown.

The point plotted on the graph in Fig. 3.2 shows the initial pressure and volume of the air inside the bag.

Sketch a line on Fig. 3.2 to show how the volume of the air changes as the pressure increases.

Answer guidance

Draw Accuracy is being marked. Use the figure and be precise about position and labels.
