CIE-5054-2025-MJ-p22 · Question 1

Theory: answer all nine questions. Show working and units. For drawings or plotted graphs, upload a clear photo of your sketch on the supplied figure.

A ball is dropped by the side of a vertical scale that is marked in centimetres.

A video recording of the fall shows the position of the ball on the scale every 0.10 s.

(a)(i)On Fig. 1.1, plot the distance–time graph for the ball. Draw a suitable line.

Answer guidance

Draw Accuracy is being marked. Use the figure and be precise about position and labels.

[2 marks]

(a)(ii)Calculate the average speed of the ball between time t = 0 and time t = 0.40 s.

Answer guidance

Calculate Show your working. The method can earn marks even when the final value is wrong, and a bare answer often cannot.

[2 marks]

(a)(iii)Describe how to use the graph in Fig. 1.1 to determine the speed of the ball at time t = 0.40 s.

Answer guidance

Describe Say what happens, in order. Reasons are not required unless the question also asks why.

[2 marks]

As the ball falls, the acceleration of the ball decreases and eventually becomes zero before it reaches the ground.

(b)(i)Explain, in terms of the forces acting, why the acceleration decreases, and why it eventually becomes zero.

Answer guidance

Explain Give reasons, not just what happens. Each distinct reason is usually worth a mark.

[3 marks]

(b)(ii)Describe the appearance of a distance–time graph when the acceleration of the ball is zero.

Answer guidance

Describe Say what happens, in order. Reasons are not required unless the question also asks why.
