Fig. 4.1 shows iron particles at an instant while the iron is a solid below its melting point.

(a)(i)State the lowest possible temperature on the Celsius scale and on the Kelvin scale.

Answer guidance

State A short answer. No explanation is needed, and adding one cannot earn extra marks.

[1 mark]

(a)(ii)The solid iron warms but remains solid. Describe how the motion of its particles changes.

Answer guidance

Describe Say what happens, in order. Reasons are not required unless the question also asks why.

(b)(i)A 300 g iron piece at 100 °C is placed into 100 g of water at 25 °C; both reach 44 °C. Water has specific heat capacity 4.2 J/(g °C), with no energy lost. Calculate the increase in the water’s internal energy.

Answer guidance

Calculate Show your working. The method can earn marks even when the final value is wrong, and a bare answer often cannot.

[2 marks]

(b)(ii)Using the same 300 g iron, 100 g water and 44 °C final temperature, calculate the specific heat capacity of iron in J/(g °C).

Answer guidance

Using You must use the thing it names. An answer that reaches the right value another way may not score.
